Choosing the right shelf
Match the shelf to the cupboard first. An Impulse shelf is cut for an Impulse cupboard and a Qube shelf for a Qube unit, and a shelf that is 20mm out simply will not sit on the supports. If you inherited the furniture and have no idea which range it is, measure the internal width of the carcass and count the pitch holes down the side panel before you order anything at all.
Then think about what is going on it. Ring binders are heavier than people expect, so spread the load across the width rather than stacking one end, and do not span a wide shelf with boxes of paper in the middle. The roll out reference shelf earns its keep where somebody works from the same file every day, since it saves the lifting; a fixed shelf is fine for archive material touched twice a year. Adding a shelf usually beats buying another cupboard, provided the pitch allows it.
When a shelf is not enough
