Bench desking from the Impulse family, built as one shared structure rather than separate desks pushed together. A single starter bay gets the run going, two and three person single row bays follow, and extension kits add a workstation on the end without a whole new frame. Neighbouring positions share a leg, so a row of six takes less floor and less steel than six separate straight desks.
Choosing bench desking
Bench works when people sit in rows and the layout is unlikely to change every month. Plan the whole run before ordering, because starter and extension bays are not interchangeable: you buy one starter and then extensions off it. Allow 1400mm or 1600mm per person for normal desk work, as 1200mm is fine for a phone based team but tight with two screens. Leave a metre behind each row so chairs push back without hitting the row behind, and more where that gap is the route to the fire door.
The strength of bench is cabling. A shared beam runs the length of the row, so one feed from a floor box serves several people instead of an extension lead per desk. Specify the in-desk power modules with the desks, because retrofitting means cutting tops. The weakness is privacy and noise, which is why most runs end up with desktop and bench screens along the spine, or the taller Impulse Plus screens where teams sit opposite each other.
What to order alongside
Storage cannot sit on the end of a bench run the way it does with individual desks, so under desk pedestals on castors and a wall of matching Impulse storage are the usual answer. If part of the team wants to stand, back to back sit-stand desks drop into a row without breaking the line. To compare frames, the Evolve Plus bench collection covers the same idea on a different leg, and the bench desking section puts every option side by side.
Bench desking installed across Suffolk and north Essex
Office Masters belongs to Neil Andrew Office Solutions, a family run office furniture business at Edison Close on Ransomes Europark in Ipswich. Neil started out with his father Malcolm in the 1980s and relaunched under his own name in 2017. We do the whole job in person across Suffolk, Essex and Norfolk, and deliver free anywhere on the UK mainland within five working days.
Bench is the one product we would push you to have installed rather than build yourself, because the frames must be square and level along the whole row or the tops will not sit flush. We build runs in Ipswich, Colchester, Felixstowe, Sudbury and Norwich. Send a floor plan with the floor box positions marked, or ring 01473 464644.
