Choosing a task chair
Start with back height. A medium back like the Tutti or the Relay supports you to shoulder blade height and tucks fully under a desk in a tight room. A high back such as the Regent, or the Nexus with its headrest, carries the neck as well and suits anyone on calls for hours. Mesh task chairs stay cooler in a south facing office, while fabric task chairs feel warmer underneath you and hide marks better in a busy shared space.
The common mistake is buying a chair whose only adjustment is seat height. Look for a tilt with a lock, and height adjustable arms like the Ventra's so the arm tops finish level with the desk instead of fouling the underside. Where somebody already has a back complaint, the ergonomic and posture chairs add seat slide and independent lumbar. Check the user weight rating too, since the heavy duty chairs use stronger bases and gas lifts.
What to buy alongside
A chair only works against a desk at the right height, so most people order seating and office desks together. A bracket from monitor arms and desk accessories lifts the screen to eye level and frees up the desk top.
