Task and operator chairs with a mesh back, which is to say the ones people sit in all day: the Tutti and Zeus medium backs, the Ventra with height adjustable arms, the Relay, and simpler shapes like the Rowan and the Orbit for touchdown desks. Nearly all pair a mesh back with a padded seat, gas lift adjustment and a five star base on castors. Against a fabric task chair the trade is simple: less warmth on your back, and a slightly firmer feel.
Choosing a task chair
Work out how many people will use each chair. A chair with one owner can have fixed arms and a fixed seat depth and still be comfortable, so long as the gas lift range suits that person. A chair shared across shifts needs height adjustable arms and a seat slide, or everybody compromises. The Fuller has folding arms, which is the answer where chairs have to tuck fully under a straight desk at the end of the day.
Set the chair up properly when it arrives, because most complaints turn out to be setup problems. Feet flat, knees a shade below the hips, the curve of the mesh in the small of your back rather than between the shoulder blades, and two fingers of clearance behind the knee. If the desk will not come down to meet you, a footrest from ergonomic accessories does more good than another chair. Where someone works at counter height, look at stools and draughtsman chairs instead.
Filling out the rest of the room
Most orders here go out alongside desking, so check the office desks and pedestals at the same time and take one delivery rather than three. For a director's office the same idea scales up in mesh executive chairs, and the wider mesh office chairs page lines every model up together. Keep spare castors from chair spares and parts in the cupboard, because the wrong castors for your floor ruin a good chair.
